What is dizziness and what are its symptoms?

Dizziness is defined as the sensation of weakness that a person may experience at various stages of life. It is described as a sign of fainting and is associated with physical and emotional factors.

Dizziness is not a risky condition and it is rarely considered an alarming sign of life or death, but rather a condition that warns of health problems.

During dizziness the person may feel the following symptoms:

  • Lightheadedness.
  • Fatigue or a feeling of floating.
  • Weakness of the body and limbs.
  • Fainting, in some cases dizziness precedes fainting. However, these are different symptoms as a result of major conditions.
  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness.

Causes of dizziness.

As mentioned earlier, dizziness is a symptom that can be caused by various health conditions related to the senses of sight and hearing, as well as problems in vital systems like the cardiovascular system.

To be more specific, these are some of the diseases that can trigger dizziness:

  • Migraine.
  • Ear infection.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Poor blood circulation.
  • Reactions to medications.
  • Anemia, low iron levels in the blood.
  • Hypoglycemia, imbalances in blood sugar levels
  • Neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease.
  • Anxiety.

  • Dehydration.
  • Toxic gas poisoning.

Types of Dizziness:

Dizziness can manifest in different ways, making its classification broad and varied. Some common types of dizziness include:

  • Dehydration-Induced Dizziness: Occurs when the body lacks sufficient water. Manifesting as weakness, fatigue, and dizziness upon standing up quickly.
  • Anxiety or Stress-Induced Dizziness: Occurs during moments of extreme stress or panic attacks, presenting with vertigo, palpitations, and a feeling of fainting.
  • Migraine-Related Dizziness: Accompanies migraine episodes, with symptoms like vertigo, nausea, and sensitivity to light.

It is essential to identify the type of dizziness experienced for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

What is vertigo and what are its symptoms?

Problemas De Vértigo

The term vertigo is often confused with dizziness; however, they are situations with notable differences.

Vertigo can be defined as a balance disorder, described as a false perception of movement around the patient. In other words, a person with vertigo perceives as if the world around them is in motion, originating from a disturbance in the vestibular system.

A vertigo crisis can occur, for example, when a patient experiences a disorder in the ear, and the vestibular nerve is compromised, causing an unreal sensation of instability and even affecting balance due to hearing loss.

When a patient has vertigo, it is likely that they are suffering from an otolaryngological condition, some situation that damages the middle ear and the connection with the vestibular system that regulates the body’s balance and analyzes body stimuli to perceive reality.

It can be noted that the treatment of vertigo is different from dizziness, as vestibular rehabilitation is required to eliminate or reduce vertigo episodes.

Among the symptoms of vertigo, we can define two:

  • Sensation that objects around the patient are spinning, leading to a feeling of instability.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Headache, in some cases.

Causes of vertigo.

The conditions in the ear are the ones that can cause damage to the balance function and cause vertigo. Therefore, the list of conditions is as follows:

  • Ménière’s disease.
  • Vestibular neuritis.
  • Tumors in the ear.
  • Trauma, fractures or fissures.
  • Chronic ear infections.
  • Neural diseases, e.g. multiple sclerosis.

Types of Vertigo:

Vertigo can be classified into various categories based on its origin and characteristics. Some common types of vertigo include:

  • Peripheral Vertigo: Originating in the inner ear and associated with disorders like Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) or Ménière’s disease.
  • Central Vertigo: Triggered by central nervous system disorders such as strokes, brain tumors, or multiple sclerosis.
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): One of the most common peripheral vertigos, triggered by specific head movements.
  • Vestibular Vertigo: Related to the labyrinth of the inner ear, characterized by intense dizziness, nausea, and balance problems.
  • Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo of Childhood: Occurs in children and may be similar to BPPV, triggered by specific head movements.

What should you do if you have recurrent symptoms of vertigo or dizziness?
